(Remembrance of Things past)
His Royal Highness the late Supreme Patriarch
Prince Vajirananavarorasa
Translated by S. Noppon
His
Majesty King Phra Chom Klao or King Rama IV, Rex Siamois, monarch of the Chakri Dynasty , is my royal father . I
was begot by my royal mother who was one of his queen-consorts, whose name was
Pae. My place of birth is located at the
princely residence in the back of the Chakrapaddi Piman Hall or the Throne Hall
next to the theatre inside the
My father or (His Majesty) the King used this as an encouraging omen of cool and delight when the Buddha sat in the rain absorbed in an ecstatic contemplation of the Enlightenment for 7 days . Even the king of serpents or naga coiled himself around the Buddhas body. Its hood spread over the head of the Lord to protect Him from the downpour . When it stopped raining , the naga turned into a young man in presence of the Buddha. It was named Manus Nag Manop. Later, when I could understand the Pali language, I came across the text on Discipline about torturing Uruvelkasapa Chadin that Manussanako or Manus Nag is the name or epithet that the Buddha called Ahinako or Ahinag, which was the Naga that turned into a serpent . The word Manus Nag is the same as a Great Man , an honourific name, which means the Buddha and also the king. When I was young I still remember that I went with His Majesty the King repeatedly to Wat Rajpradit . Once His Majesty asked the Supreme Patriarch Pussadev Sa, who was then His Eminence Phra Sasana Sophon whether there be a person by the name of a human being or not . This Supreme Patriarch kept thinking over for a while , and told His Majesty that there be no such a person. The King then pointed at me in his presence staying behind him, and said that this person was called human being or Manus. My observation is that His Majesty chortled, so did the Supreme Patriarch. Manus Nag Manop according to the text means the young naga turned into a person. The Magatha or Pali vocabulary which can now be undoubtedly translated as Manop. His Majestys word as explained from Magatha vocabulary means human being or an offspring of Manu. The Sanskrit word also carries the same meaning, but the word and the language in those days were not widely known. The meaning in the latter part of Vikappa, a Pali text, is a human who turns into a naga or a naga who turns into a human. The term in this text also means a person of importance or a Great Man. I am the 47th child of His Majesty and the 4th child of his consort , who had altogether 5 children.
In the following year or B.E. 2404 (AD 1861), my mother passed away. I do not remember her exactly.
